Introduction to Daniel
Chapters 1-3

Overview

At first glance, the book of Daniel seems to be a book primarily about man’s ability to persevere through faith. The recorded experiences of Daniel, and those who we more commonly refer to as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, amazingly mirror the lessons that prove incredibly worthy to small group and team spiritual enrichment. The book of Daniel is an outline for the importance of integrity, respect for authority, and answering the call to be what God has called His children to be and not just talking or singing about it. The book of Daniel ignites the ministry minded individual and helps put the priority of service in ministry into perspective.

Obedience proves to be the overwhelming requirement throughout the book of Daniel. Faith, having been predeposited in the lives of these four young men, catapults them through one victory after another over their enemy, who is most often their captor. The larger victories are preluded with a challenge of spiritual integrity and a question of the omnipotence of the God of the Hebrews. There is a perpetual diliberance in the lives of these four to prove the Father of Israel and Judah as the one true God. In their most unintentionally, offensive acts, they lived, with little effort, it seems, in a constant state of example of what God requires from true believers and leave little question as to the difference between the faithful and the heathen.

Submission and commitment, under what appears to be in the natural, one of the most excruciating times of trial for Israel, are actually overshadowed by the proof through God’s faithfulness to these four, that even through the seventy years of captivity in Babylon, God’s heart was with and eyes were on His elect. These young men, regardless of circumstance and condition, found peace with God more favorable than peace with man, regardless of stature. While these four men never verifiably converted those that witnessed the move of God in their lives, they each planted a seed and were faithful over what God had provided them with. In their lives, like ours, are sown, by God, the seeds of possibility to be to God and for man all that He has called His children to be.
